Switch an Existing Clinic from Single-Rate to Multi-Rate Tax (Beta)

How an existing clinic already using single-rate tax can move to multi-rate, including what to do with products that already have a tax rate assigned.

What is this?

By default, a Digitail clinic runs in single-rate tax mode: every product, service, or sale line carries exactly one tax rate. Multi-rate mode lets a product or service carry more than one tax rate at once - for example GST and PST together - with the percentages summed automatically at checkout. This guide covers moving an existing clinic that's already using single-rate tax over to multi-rate, including what happens to products that already have a rate assigned.

Before you start

  • You need the Administration Settings permission to manage tax rates and preferences

  • If you plan to use Bulk Update Tax (see step 3), you also need the Edit Product Prices permission

  • Confirm every tax rate you'll need already exists in your Tax Rates table - add any that are missing first, since a rate's Percentage and Applicable Tax Area lock once saved

  • Multi-rate tax cannot be turned off from the UI once enabled - contact support if you need to revert it later

Step-by-step: moving to multi-rate

1. Complete your Tax Rates list

  1. Go to Administration → Clinic Account → Company Fiscal Info

  2. In the Tax Rates table, add any rate you're missing (Name, Percentage, Applicable Tax Area)

2. Turn on multiple tax rates per product/service

  1. Go to Administration → Preferences → Inventory & Billing

  2. Turn on Enable multiple tax rates per product/service

3. Update your existing products and services

Use Bulk Update Tax (Inventory/Nomenclature → Directory → Products) to reassign tax rates on many products or services in one action. This is now available to any clinic with multi-rate tax enabled.

Select the items you want to update, then choose one or two tax rates to apply — this lets you move a batch of products from single-rate to multi-rate, or back down to a single rate, all in one confirmation step.

  • Up to two tax rates can be assigned per bulk action.

  • For anything the bulk action doesn't cover, you can still open a product or service individually and adjust its tax rate(s).

How to verify it works

  1. Spot-check a few updated products or services and confirm the tax selector shows the correct rate(s)

  2. Run a test sale and confirm the applied tax equals the sum of the assigned rates

  3. If you used Bulk Update Tax, confirm the Products table refreshed automatically with the new VAT once the batch finished

Common Questions

Can I bulk-assign multiple tax rates to many products at once?

Yes. Bulk Update Tax allows you to assign a maximum of two tax rates for products or services

Do I need to update every product manually?

No. Bulk Update Tax handles moving many products or services to a new single or dual tax rate at once. Manual, per-item updates are only needed for one-off exceptions that Bulk Update Tax doesn't cover.

Will switching to multi-rate change my current prices?

No. Reassigning tax rates, in bulk or individually, does not change a product's final selling price.

Can I turn multi-rate back off if it doesn't work out?

Not from the UI. Contact Digitail support to revert the setting.
