General setup notes for printing
Follow these setup notes on every clinic workstation or tablet that prints from Digitail.
Always print from Google Chrome for consistent formatting.
ChromeOS is not supported by most label printers. Don't use ChromeOS devices for clinic workstations that need to print.
Make sure the workstation or tablet has the latest printer driver (Dymo Connect, Brother P-touch, or Zebra Setup Utilities).
Set the orientation to Landscape and the scale to Fit to Printable Area, depending on your printer model.
If the printer uses Wi-Fi, make sure the printer and the workstation or tablet are on the same network.
On tablets, Digitail relies on the browser and the tablet's printing service app. Digitail does not integrate directly with printers.
Printing clinic documents from Digitail
Digitail creates clinic documents as PDF files. Any printer that connects to a computer, directly or over a network, can print them.
The printer only needs to appear in your web browser's print dialog, which looks like this:
If a printer is available when you print from a web browser, it works with Digitail.
Dymo label printer setup
Dymo printers only accept Dymo labels
Modern Dymo LabelWriter printers (including the 550, 550 Turbo, and LabelWriter Wireless) only work with Dymo-brand labels. You can't use off-brand labels, such as labels with a pre-printed "For Veterinary Use Only" disclaimer or a paw decoration.
Printing to Dymo printers from mobile devices is limited.
Operating systems that work with Dymo printers
Windows 10 and 11
macOS
Recommended Dymo label sizes
When you print to a Dymo printer, the paper size list shows Dymo label SKU numbers. For example:
30324 (same size as 30258, 2 1/8 x 2 3/4″)
30857 (2 1/4 x 4″)
1933088 (2 5/16 x 4″)
30374 (2 x 3 1/2″)
For more sizes, see the Dymo label size chart. It may not include every size.
Dymo models that work with Digitail
Dymo LabelWriter Wireless (LWW), Wi-Fi capable
Dymo LabelWriter 550, LAN capable
Dymo LabelWriter 550 Turbo, LAN capable
Dymo LabelWriter 5XL, LAN capable
Note: The Dymo LabelWriter 450 is discontinued. It can't connect to a network on its own and sometimes prints labels upside down.
Recommended Dymo printer settings
Use official Dymo RFID labels
Orientation: Landscape, set in your Windows or macOS printer settings
Scale: Default, Fit to Printable Area, or Fit to Paper, depending on label size. You usually don't need a custom scale if your paper size matches the label template size in Digitail.
Quality: 300 dpi or higher, set in your Windows or macOS printer settings
Margins: 0.1 inch on all sides, set in your Windows or macOS printer settings
Keep the Dymo printer on the same network as the workstation
This screenshot shows where to find these settings:
Brother label printer setup (QL-810W, QL-810Wc, QL-820NWB, and QL-820NWBc)
Before you set up a Brother printer
All four Brother models connect over Wi-Fi. The QL-820 models also connect over LAN.
Brother printers need Brother software installed on the workstation.
Brother printers need a default paper size set in your system printer settings.
Recommended Brother label sizes
DK-1202: 2 3/7 x 4″ (62 x 100 mm)
DK-1208: 1 1/2 x 3 1/2″ (38 x 90 mm)
Other Brother continuous label rolls also work from computers, but not from mobile devices. They need extra setup in your system printer settings.
Where Brother printers work well
Brother printers work well on Windows, macOS, and tablets. Tablets need separate label rolls, not continuous tape.
Android printing service apps recognize Brother printers when the labels match the template size.
Brother printers are a lower-cost option. See the Recommended hardware list above for current prices.
Brother printers connect over Wi-Fi.
Brother printers are widely used by clinics in Australia and North America.
Printing to Brother printers from tablets
On iPad (iOS), printing requires AirPrint.
On Android, Digitail creates a file that you share with a printing service app. Most Android devices have one installed by default.
If you plan to print from mobile devices, buy label rolls, not continuous tape. On Android, you can't set the paper size to the width of continuous tape (2.4″).
Recommended Brother printer settings
Browser: Google Chrome
Orientation: Landscape
Paper size: 2.4 x 4″ (62 x 100 mm)
Scale: Fit to Printable Area or Fit to Paper
Quality: 300 dpi
Margins: 0.1 inch on all sides (in the label template)
Connection: Wi-Fi, but not Wi-Fi Direct if several devices print to the same printer
Zebra label printer setup (ZD410, ZD411, ZD420, and ZD421)
Zebra ZD400 series printers are enterprise-grade thermal label printers known for durability and consistent print quality.
Important: The Zebra ZD410 and ZD420 are discontinued, and Zebra support for them ended in 2024 and 2025. Zebra recommends the ZD411 and ZD421 instead.
Recommended Zebra label sizes
ZD411: 2″ labels
ZD421: 4″ labels
Zebra printer limitations
Zebra models that Zebra no longer supports will likely have issues printing over the network, or can't be set up for it at all. Network setup needs help from your local IT.
Zebra printers are popular with larger veterinary clinics, but they cost much more than other label printers.
Zebra printers are reliable when you print from computers.
Printing to Zebra printers from tablets is limited, especially on older models.
Printing to Zebra printers from tablets
iPad (iOS): Printing requires AirPrint, which Zebra printers don't support.
Android: Printing requires a third-party printing app. Testing has been limited and reliability is mixed.
Some clinics use cloud-based print services to print to Zebra printers from tablets.
Recommended Zebra printer settings
Connection: USB, LAN, WLAN (Wi-Fi), or Bluetooth
Driver: Zebra Designer or Zebra Setup Utilities
Margins: 0.1 inch on all sides (in the label template)
Quality: 300 dpi
Note: A wireless connection requires an extra hardware option on the Zebra printer.
Monitor size for wide-screen pages
Some Digitail pages are designed for wide screens, such as Reports, Calendar, Whiteboard (if enabled), and Inventory Directory. These pages are easiest to use on a wider monitor.
You can use Digitail on a 13″ laptop or a mobile phone, but wide-screen pages work best on a larger monitor.
A larger monitor matters most for front-desk staff, inventory managers, and practice managers.
We recommend a Full HD monitor with a screen size of at least 24 inches for these pages.
Microphones and speakers for QuickSOAP
Some Digitail features, such as QuickSOAP, need a microphone or speakers.
You need a microphone to use QuickSOAP and record your voice for transcription. We recommend a dedicated Bluetooth microphone for ease of use. A wired microphone works too. Digitail works with any microphone your device recognizes.
Choose a microphone that doesn't need special software to work with your computer.
Choose a microphone that picks up sound across a larger area. Otherwise, you need to keep the microphone close to your mouth while you record.
You may sometimes need speakers or headphones to play back a recording. Any audio device that plays sound from your computer or mobile device works.
Using barcode scanners with Digitail
Barcode scanners work with Digitail without any special software. Install any driver that comes with your barcode scanner.
Digitail doesn't have hooks or triggers for barcode scanners. When you scan a barcode, the scanner copies the value (text or number) and pastes it into the active text field, if there is one.
Example: scan a barcode into the search field
Click the $ button in the top menu.
Click the search field.
Scan a barcode. The barcode value is pasted into the search field.
Computer and operating system recommendations
Digitail works in most web browsers, but we recommend Google Chrome as the most stable. Label printing also works best in Google Chrome.
We recommend Windows or macOS computers, or Android or iOS tablets. Label printing from mobile devices has limits. See the Brother and Zebra label printer sections above.
We don't recommend ChromeOS devices, although some clinics use them successfully. ChromeOS devices tend to have very little RAM (memory) and need a complicated setup for label printing.
We recommend a device with a modern processor (CPU) released after 2022 and, for computers, at least 8 GB of RAM. Most computers in the Recommended hardware list above have 16 GB. You don't need a separate video card (GPU). The built-in graphics on lower-cost processors work fine.
Choose a computer with the operating system installed on an SSD (solid-state drive), not an HDD (hard drive). An SSD is much faster, so Digitail runs better. If you're choosing a drive, pick a reliable brand such as Samsung, Crucial, WD, or Toshiba.
