Digitail Hardware recommendations

Hardware and device recommendations to ensure reliable printing, smooth setup, and optimal performance in Digitail.

Updated yesterday

Overview

Digitail is flexible and works on a wide range of hardware; however, clinics see significantly better performance and fewer issues when using the recommended configurations below. This guide answers the most common questions clinics ask during setup and is designed to ensure smooth printing, consistent browser performance, and reliable in-room workflows.

General Setup Notes

  • Always print from Google Chrome for consistent formatting.

  • Chrome OS is not supported by most label printers and should not be used for any clinic workstations intended for printing.

  • Ensure the workstation or tablet has the latest printer driver (Dymo Connect, Brother P-Touch, Zebra Setup Utilities).

  • Use Landscape orientation, and scale Fit to Printable area, depending on printer model.

  • When using Wi-Fi, ensure the printer and the workstation/tablet are on the same network.

  • For tablets, Digitail relies on the browser and printing service app — Digitail does not directly integrate with printers.

Printing Clinic Documents from Digitail

Digitail generates PDF documents that can be printed by any printer that can connect to a computer directly or over a network.

The requirement is that the printer is available through a web browser’s printing dialogue, which looks like this:

If a printer is available to print from a web browser, then it will work with Digitail.

Printer Brands & Models

Dymo

Important information:

Modern Dymo label writers (including 550, 550 Turbo, Label Writer Wireless - LWW, etc) will not accept off-brand labels. These printers will only work with labels from Dymo, which means you cannot purchase labels with a pre-printed disclaimer “For Veterinary Use Only” or with a paw decoration.

Support for printing from mobile devices is limited

Compatible Operating Systems:

  • Windows 10, 11

  • MacOS

Recommended label sizes

When working with Dymo printers, you will typically get a list of paper sizes, which are also SKU numbers for Dymo labels.

For example:

  • 30324 (same size as 30258 - 2 1/8 x 2 3/4”)

  • 30857 (2 1/4 x 4”)

  • 1933088 (2 5/16 x 4”)

  • 30374 (2 x 3 1/2”)

You can find the chart here: https://newellbrands.imgix.net/a6568e21-953c-3b37-8405-123fd5c15799/a6568e21-953c-3b37-8405-123fd5c15799.pdf, but please note that it may not include some of the sizes.

Models proven to work with Digitail:

  • Dymo LW Wireless, aka Dymo LWW (Wi-Fi capable)

  • DYMO LabelWriter 550 (LAN-capable)

  • DYMO LabelWriter 550 Turbo (LAN-capable)

  • DYMO LabelWriter 5XL (LAN-capable)

Dymo 450 - discontinued, no independent network capability, sometimes prints upside down

Recommended Setup

  • Use official Dymo RFID labels

  • Orientation: Landscape

  • Scale: Fit to Printable Area or Fit to Paper (depending on label size)

  • Quality: 300 dpi or higher

  • Margins: 0.1 inch on all sides

  • Keep the printer on the same network as the workstation

Brother (QL-810W / 810Wc / QL-820NWB / 820NWBc)

Important information

  • These printers have WiFi and LAN (820 model) connectivity.

  • These printers require the installation of Brother software.

  • These printers require the default paper size setup in system printer settings.

Recommended Label Sizes

  • DK-1202: 2 3/7in × 4in or 62mm x 100mm

  • DK-1208: 1 1/2" x 3 1/2" or 38mm x 90mm

  • Additional Brother-supported continuous label rolls also work (not with mobile devices!) but require a bit more setup in system printer settings.

Known Compatibility

  • Works well across Windows, macOS, and tablet workflows (only with separate label rolls, not continuous tape)

  • Successfully recognized by Android printing service apps when labels match the template size.

  • Cheap (~150-200 USD for the 810 model)

  • WiFi connectivity

  • Widely used in AUS and NA clinics.

Tablet Printing Notes

  • On iPad/iOS, requires AirPrint.

  • On Android, Digitail generates a file that must be shared with a dedicated printing service app - installed by default on most Android devices.

  • Make sure to purchase label rolls and not continuous tape if you plan to print from mobile devices - it’s impossible to set the paper size as just the continuous tape width (2.4”) at least on Android.

Recommended Setup

  • Browser: Google Chrome

  • Orientation: Landscape

  • Paper Size: 2.4" × 4"

  • Scale: Fit to Printable Area or Fit to Paper

  • Quality: 300 dpi or 720 dpi

  • Margins: 0.1 inch on all sides (in label template)

  • Connection: Wi-Fi (but not Wi-Fi Direct if there are multiple devices)

Zebra ZD400 Series (ZD410/ZD411, ZD420/ZD421)

Overview

Enterprise-grade thermal printers are known for durability and print consistency.

Zebra ZD410 and ZD420 are popular models, but they are both discontinued and support ended in 2024-2025. Zebra recommends ZD411 and ZD421 instead.

Recommended Label Size

  • ZD411: 2in

  • ZD421: 4in

Known limitations:

  • Models that are currently not supported by Zebra will likely have issues or be impossible to set up to print over the network (requires local IT help for setup)

  • Zebra is widely popular at larger veterinary clinics, but is much more expensive

  • Reliability is strong when printing from computers

  • Tablet printing is limited, especially for older Zebra models

Tablet Printing Notes

  • iPad/iOS: Requires AirPrint, which Zebra does not support.

  • Android: Requires third-party printing apps; limited testing, mixed reliability.

  • Clinics and PMSs often use cloud-based print services (e.g., EzyVet’s EzyPrint) to support tablet workflows.

Recommended Setup

  • Connection: USB, LAN, WLAN (WiFi), Bluetooth.

  • Driver: Zebra Designer / Zebra Setup Utilities

  • Margins: 0.1 in on all sides (in label template)

  • Quality: 300 dpi

Note: wireless connection requires an extra hardware option

Monitors

General Recommendations

  • Digitail has some wide-screen interfaces, such as Reports, Calendar, Whiteboard (if enabled), and Inventory Directory

  • In order to navigate these pages successfully, we recommend using monitors with a wider screen.

  • You can use Digitail with a 13” laptop or a mobile phone, but the best experience in the pages above is when you use a larger monitor.

  • This applies to: receptionists, inventory managers/practice managers.

  • We recommend a Full HD monitor with at least a 24-inch diagonal size for the applications listed above.

Audio

General Recommendations

  • Digitail has some audio capabilities that require a microphone or speakers.

  • A microphone is required to use the QuickSOAP feature and record your voice for transcription. We recommend a dedicated microphone with Bluetooth connection (for ease of use). Cable connection works too; Digitail is agnostic to the specific device you may use.

  • Please make sure that the microphone you purchase does not require any special software to work with your computer.

  • We recommend microphones that can cover a larger area - otherwise, you would need to keep the microphone close to your mouth when recording.

  • You may need a simple speaker or headphones to listen to a recording of your voice sometimes. It doesn’t really matter what kind of audio device you choose in this case, as long as it can play sound from your computer or mobile device.

Barcode scanners

General Recommendations

  • Digitail integrates with barcode scanners indirectly - no special software required, as long as you install any driver that potentially comes with your barcode scanner.

  • Digitail doesn’t have any hooks/triggers for scanners. If you press a button on your scanner, it doesn’t do anything except for copying the value (text/number) into the clipboard and pasting it if a text field is available.

  • Example of using a barcode scanner with Digitail: Press the $ button at the top menu and click the search field. Scan a barcode. It will be pasted into the search field

Computer / OS recommendations

General Recommendations

  • Digitail works well in most web browsers, but we recommend Google Chrome as the most stable one (and label printing works the best in Google Chrome from our experience)

  • We generally recommend using Windows or macOS computers, or Android / iOS-based tablets. Note that there are limitations to label printer integration for mobile devices - please read the relevant section at the top.

  • We generally don’t recommend using ChromeOS-based devices, although there are clinics that successfully use them. They tend to have very little RAM (memory) and require a complicated setup for label printing.

  • We recommend a device with a modern processor (CPU) released after 2022, and for computers, with 16 GB (or more) RAM. There is no requirement for a video card (GPU); embedded video that comes with cheaper processors should work just fine.

  • We recommend a computer where the OS is installed on an SSD drive as opposed to an HDD (hard drive), because the former is much faster than the latter - your experience will be much better with SSD. Choose reliable brands if the question comes to selecting specific disks - such as Samsung, Crucial, WD, and Toshiba.
